About the Artwork
This portrait imagines Charles Baudelaire as a child — not in historical likeness, but in spirit. It belongs to the Opium Dream series, Davina Shefet’s first body of work, where the artist conjured an opium-filled dreamscape of 1830s Parisian bohemians. Figures drift between abstraction and figuration, their outlines dissolving like smoke, caught in an atmosphere of melancholy and reverie.
In L’Enfant Baudelaire, the face is pale, almost mask-like, emerging from a storm of blues, violets, and fiery undertones. Shefet paints with blue in place of black, infusing darkness with luminosity. The child figure carries both innocence and spleen — an echo of Baudelaire’s future obsessions with beauty, decadence, and despair.
The painting becomes less a portrait than a vision: a spectral encounter with the poet before he was formed, already touched by the melancholy that would define his art.
