About the Artwork

This artwork is part of Davina Shefet’s series Douceur de Vivre (The Softness of Living), a body of work inspired by tender childhood memories of growing up in the south of France. The series captures fleeting moments of innocence and wonder, translating them into dreamlike images where everyday experiences become luminous, almost mythical.

In this piece, the artist recalls her very first memory of the circus — the magical day she was chosen as a child to ride an elephant. Draped in colorful ornaments, the elephant moves with a gentle grandeur, carrying the small figure of the girl across a stage of pink and black. The scene is painted not as a literal depiction but as a nostalgic vision, imbued with softness and childlike awe. It becomes less about the circus itself and more about the pure wonder of being lifted into a world larger than oneself, where joy and tenderness linger like fragments of a dream.
