About the Artwork

Lovers in Persian Colors is a contemporary homage to the vast legacy of Persian art — from the lyrical worlds of illuminated manuscripts and poetry to the ornamental richness of rugs, textiles, and gardens. It also nods to the gilded opulence of Klimt, marking Shefet’s first series to incorporate gold leaf.

In these paintings, figures and animals inhabit landscapes that are both allegorical and ornamental: women riding fantastical horses, lovers surrounded by blossoms, bodies woven into the same fabric as the flowers and patterns around them. The gold ground transforms them into icons, while the vivid colors and fluid brushwork make them pulse with modern emotion.
