About the Artwork
This painting belongs to Davina Shefet’s series First, There Was Magic, which imagines a post-apocalyptic world reshaped by enchantment after a great flood. In this vision, the sea has reclaimed the earth and transformed it — coral reefs have risen out of the water to become radiant mountains, animals have evolved into magical beings, and women wander through landscapes that fuse survival with myth.
Here, the legendary Queen of Sheba appears not as a biblical monarch but as a dreamlike heroine, inspired by Flaubert’s poetic reimagining. She rides in a giant shell drawn by pink dolphins, their bodies glistening as they carry her across a sea of shifting colors. The coral mountains loom like cathedrals behind her, glowing with their new terrestrial life. It is a scene of transformation and sovereignty, where Sheba is both ruler and wanderer — a nomadic queen carried by the creatures of a newly enchanted world.
