About the Artwork
Therapy is a Bitch (2018) is one of Davina Shefet’s earliest bodies of work, born from a raw confrontation with the self. Painted in urgent colors and turbulent lines, these works embody the paradox of therapy: a process meant to heal, yet often experienced as violent, destabilizing, and exhausting.
In this series, the body becomes the stage where inner battles unfold. Figures stretch, resist, and dissolve into waves of color, caught between collapse and release. The distorted anatomies are not failures of form but metaphors for what happens when buried tension rises to the surface — when memory, pain, and desire push through the skin in search of expression.
Trying to Release Tension portrays a body locked in an awkward, almost theatrical stretch. Limbs are elongated, exaggerated, as though the figure is straining against invisible knots inside the flesh. The colors vibrate with both violence and humor, suggesting that liberation is messy, imperfect, and sometimes ridiculous. This painting embodies the absurdity of therapeutic release — the gestures we perform to free ourselves, even when they leave us tangled in new forms of discomfort.
