About the Artwork

This painting opens Davina Shefet’s series Self-Pity Party, a project that bridges music and painting to explore the five stages of love through a lens of drama, irony, and emotional excess. Each work is a visual song — an anthem to the intensity, fragility, and sometimes theatrical absurdity of relationships. The title itself reflects a deliberately “too much” tone, where heartbreak and humor intertwine.

In this first piece, a reclining woman drifts in a dreamlike state, her body surrounded by swirling colors and anchored by the phrase “The Idea of Love is an Aching Song.” An exotic bird hovers above her, echoing both fragility and desire, as if carrying the weight of longing. This canvas represents the very first stage of love — the fantasy, the projection, the imagined perfection of another person. It is about dreaming before reality intrudes, about the delicious ache of anticipation. Both ironic and tender, the work invites viewers to recognize themselves in the melodrama, to smile at their own excesses, and to surrender, briefly, to the theater of love.
