About the Artwork

This piece is part of Davina Shefet’s First, There Was Magic series, a reimagining of a post-apocalyptic world where women and girls nurture the rebirth of life alongside magical creatures. Inspired by medieval motifs such as the maiden and the unicorn, the series transforms these archetypes into visions of resilience and tenderness in a world rebuilt through myth.

In this scene, a young woman with cascading pink hair appears as a guardian — a mother of all creatures. She holds a baby dragon close to her heart while guiding a youthful unicorn through an enchanted forest heavy with fruit and flowers. The unicorn, innocent and luminous, mirrors the dragon’s fragile ferocity, and both lean into the woman’s protective presence.
